TIVO will be launching a new edition to its DVR family the BOLT OTA, which is set to ship out Friday September 28

The Bolt Ota will start at $250 with a monthly service fee of $6.99 which is cheaper than its companion the Bolt Vox which is $14.99.  It has 4 tuners which means you are able to watch or record 4 shows at once and has a list of popular app integrated , such as Hulu, Netflix and so on.

The new receiver will support the TIVO Mini ($179) as well, but will only work over ethernet and not coax.

With that being said lets get to what the biggest issue for me is. Assuming you have money burning in your pockets that you just need to get rid of this may be a “deal” for you. For me the monthly service fee is a biiig deal breaker.

Sure, I realize they are offering a service that deserves payment but if we look at the big picture here, cord cutting is about saving money and not throwing it away at something useless. I say that knowing that there are “free” alternatives to this service that they are offering. Cord cutters, let us not forget the main reason we are cutting the cord.

If you were to ask 100 people what they dislike about pay TV they would say the fees aside from the same programming being aired which they nor we can do anything about.

Tivo themselves have said they are not competing with other companies like Amazon or Tablo they are competing with the pay tv companies. Let that sink in for a second…3…2…1..

I’m not bashing TiVo for the service they are offering what I’m saying is there are free alternatives. And the service they are offering is so readily available all you have to do is some research.  For example Amazon is releasing the Recast while other streaming services offer an on screen guide for free.

If you have windows media center all you need is an internet connection and the channel lineup is there for free. As far as product replacement, as I said before you have cheaper options.

At the end of the day it’s your money, after all you are “saving” hundreds of dollars per year by “cutting the cord” so what’s $7 or $15 a month.
