Read Article: 6 Major Stations in Mobile and Pensacola add Next Gen TV

First launched in South Korea back in 2017, ATSC  3.0 (Next Gen TV)  is the next generation in broadcast media designed to improve our overall television viewing experience.

Notable Pros:

  • Better video and audio quality
  • Combines over the air with Over the top(OTT) for a better viewing experience
  • Automated channel rescans ( similar to set top box updates)
  • More program info
  • mobile viewing

Notable cons:

  • Possible Data tracking
  • Won’t work with current TV tuners
Unlimited DVR included with Philo TV – Try Now!

ASTC 3.0 has gone through 9 phases and the final phase, (phase 10) ends in July 2020. That means no more rescanning for channels. The phases were set in place for broadcasters to relocate their current spectrum. Many cord cutters may have already noticed that the are able to receive more channels. The channels I am able to pull in have nearly doubled over the past year.

In full scope Next Gen TV is set to give OTA users more flexibility in viewing.

  • Automotive applications
  • IPTV services
  • Detailed interactive program guides

Next Gen TV’s full capabilities aren’t expected to fully accessibly for a few more years but the list of capabilities could put some services out of business. The big question is how do companies like TiVo who essentially make a living off of guide fees plan to combat this new technology that’ll pretty much give services they charge for to consumers for free.
