Roku has yet to budge on it’s standard 30% ad and 20% new subscriber fees for newly released HBO Max and Peacock TV.
Roku’s founder and CEO Anthony Wood stated in a Variety article “Our platform is open to these services on very reasonable terms, all of their main competitors are available on the Roku platform. Fair and reasonable content distribution deals are how we finance the low-cost, easy-to-use Roku platform that consumers use to access these services on their TVs.”
Disputes like this are more likely to sway users away form Roku’s platform as there are many streaming devices, including Smart TV’s that offer the 2 services. While Roku’s products and platform have become popular with streamers everywhere, they are not the only game in town.
Depending on what HBO Max and Peacock decides to do, I feel this dispute could hurt Roku in the long run if the HBO Max and Peacock decide explore other avenues, because people buy Roku devices for content and if the content they need isn’t there, then why buy the product.
