The Streaming Wars continue as YouTube TV has released a statement addressing the potential loss of channels in an on going carriage dispute with Comcast owned NBCUniversal. YouTube TV has decided to approach the problem in an untraditional way. Instead of giving in to NBCU’s demands and paying a bigger fee, they have chosen instead to drop their subscription price if a deal is not reached.

“If NBCU offers us equitable terms, we’ll renew our agreement with them. However, if we are unable to reach a deal by Thursday, the NBCU lineup of channels will no longer be available on YouTube TV and we will decrease our monthly price by $10, from $64.99 to $54.99 (while this content remains off our platform). You can sign up for NBC’s own direct-to-consumer streaming service, Peacock, which they offer for $4.99/month to continue watching NBCU content, such as Sunday Night Football.”

If a deal isn’t reached YouTube TV subscribers in a sense will save $5 per month. It’s a win win either way for consumers, but this dispute is just a glimpse of what’s to come for cord-cutters everywhere. Content makers are starting to corrupt the streaming world the same way they did the pay tv industry. YouTube TV deserves an applause for the way they are handling this situation. Not only are they saying “screw you and your terms” but they’re also highlighting the greed that many of these content makers have.
