2 years ago I bought and reviewed a handheld retro game console that held over 3,000 games from more than 7 classic game consoles. Soon after that and before the launch of gaming subscriptions, that said game console was no longer available.
The popularity of games with in-app purchases have become a cash cow for a lot of companies. Big tech has moved to gaming platforms with monthly subscriptions such as Amazon Luna and Google Stadia, These services are great but what if you don’t want to be continuously connected or what happens if you can’t update your device.
A few months ago I decided to purge my cellphone and I deleted most of my social media apps and the addictive games associated with them. This, no joke, added about 4 hours to my day. After a few weeks of being super productive I decided I needed some form of entertainment , but I didn’t want to add those games that required an internet connection. So I picked up my retro game console that’s been collecting dust for over a year.
Browsing through the 3,000 game I questioned why I even needed “newer” games. Honestly the pros outweigh what most people see as the cons.
The Pros of Retro Gaming
- No ads
- No waiting for lives. New age retro consoles allow you to save at any point in your game. So you can resume gameplay even after the battery has died.
- No begging friends for extra lives. (annoying)
- Continuous play
- Access to classic games at any time and on the go.
- tons of fun
Cons of Retro Gaming
- Battery dies without warning
- No online gameplay
- No live chat
The game console I purchased unfortunately is no longer available, but I put together some similar devices you may want to check out.
