The HD Homerun by SiliconDust lets you watch free over the air television without the need to have antennas at each television location. The current models have 2, 3 and 4 tuners, which means that you can watch up to 4 separate shows ant once.

Requirements

  •  An internet connection is needed to watch across different platforms, which for some people could be a drawback.
  • You must have a smart television or a device capable of installing apps such as a tablet, cell phone game console ect.
  • External hard drive (if you buy the Dvr model)
  • HD antenna and coaxial cable
  • ethernet cord for connection to router

 Setup

The setup is pretty simple. First you need to connect your HD antenna(not included) to the coaxial port on the back of the HD Homerun. You will need to decide what antenna you need for optimal reception in your area, but assuming you have that part taking care of the next step would be connect to your router or directly into your modem (it cannot connect using wifi) if you’re not using a router.

After that plug in your power source. Once you have done that you will need to download the app or software at SiliconDust.com If you plan on recording the best option would be to buy an external HDD hard drive, I would recommend a 1 terabyte or above just to be on the safe side and they run pretty cheap nowadays.

The Service

What I do like about this device is that no subscription is required. If you go with the free option your guide shows programming 24hrs out but no DVR functions. With the subscribed service ($35yr) you have a 14-day guide and also have access to DVR functions.

The HD Homerun gets a score of 23 out of 30.

  • PRICE-The price is not bad for the options and features you get, and I don’t feel like they try to force extras on me
  • FUNCTION-I can see the setup and installation being a bit of a problem for people who aren’t technically inclined
  • YRLY SAVINGS- I give them an 8 of 10 because there is a cost but overall it’s still a great value for what you get
