If your internet seems to be running slow you may want to check that your routers firmware is up-to-date before you call your internet service provider (ISP).
There are a few ways this can done, one way is using the Netgear Nighthawk app and the other is accessing your routers settings from a computer or mobile device connected to your routers wi-fi. Of course your router model will determine which method is right for you.
How to access your router using a web browser
From a device that is connected to your routers wi-fi open a web browser and type in “routerlogin.net” this will bring up a login screen. if you don’t remember your credentials take a photo of the sticker on bottom or side of your router, this sticker should have the serial number and other info on it. You will need it to setup new login credentials. (FYI, if you’ve never logged into your routers settings try using the default username= admin– password= password)
In the main menu you’ll see a few options and if there is a new firmware update available it will be front and center as seen in the image above. From this screen you can also check on the connection status of your router, view how many devices are connected, ban devices, add a timer for how long a certain device can be on your network amongst other things.
Do Not Disturb the Router When Firmware is Updating!!
Interrupting the update process can possible ‘brick’ your router, meaning it will become a useless paperweight, so make sure you have a good reliable power connection.
