Quibi’s launch was a complete failure, no question about it. But despite it’s fast downfall and recent attempts to corral their wandering streamers there may be a place for Quibi’s selfish technology.
While other streaming services make it easy for you to watch on almost any device Quibi doesn’t. And I believe there is a market for this technology.
Quibi’s features at launch were limited to:
- No screen shots
- No screen mirroring
- Limited to only watch on a mobile device
- Only one concurrent stream per account
New features as of June 2020:
- Chromecast
- Airplay
- Fire TV app
- Android TV App
The new features were added because no one really wants to watch professional detailed content with a story line on their phone. Yea, short content is good for YouTube and Facebook but not for a paid professional streaming service.
Social media platforms are successful in digital media because there’s really nothing to follow, no story line, no synopsis, no characters and no plot. Just sporadic, ridiculous videos that make you laugh or make you angry.
Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg has said the failure was due in some part to COVID-19, but as stated in previous articles, COVID-19 has seen the most streaming hours yet.
Many companies cancelled data limits and some even had to borrow Spectrum from others.
So what market should Quibi get into? Well the choice is simple. What profession values their content more than anyone else? Comedians. Quibi’s at launch platform is perfect for Comics and here’s how it should work.
Since COVID-19 working comics have seen an extreme decline in revenue. Top comic D.L. Hughley said he’s lost over 70% of his income due to the Global pandemic.
Many comics aren’t able to perform live anymore until this whole thing gets figured out, and many are taking to Instagram and other live platforms to do live shows and chat with their fans. The audience is there, they just need a platform to be on.
Working comics don’t want their material plastered all over social media and Quibi’s no share platform would be a perfect place for any comic to put shows or even clips on. No sharing. The content stays fresh for new fans and the comic is able to perform as usual.
How it would work:
- Short sets, not clips of comics performing their material.
- Could be taped at any comedy house that has appropriate seating for it’s guest ( live audience)
- Make it so the comic can be followed on the Quibi platform
- Since Quibi is based off of a social media platform (youtube) when a comic reaches a certain number of followers he can start doing live shows.
- Comedian sets are aired on certain dates. For example Dave Chappelle videos air on Mondays, D. L. on Tuesdays and so forth
Once the relationship is established other content will develop. Quibi is the perfect place for any comic in these times. This one move could make Quibi the top competitor for other streaming and social media platforms.
