Have you ever been invited to a gathering, not really wanting to go but went anyway just to say you were there, but ended up having the time of your life? Yea?
That’s the same feeling I got when I signed up for the Discovery+ free trial membership. I’m already waist deep in memberships; Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Disney+ and lets not get into non streaming memberships like Planet Fitness and car insurance. Yea, car insurance is a membership, because it’s definitely not an investment. 20 years with the same company and no “Thank You” letter or return whatsoever.
Unlike other niche streaming services that tend to have an uneven balance of content, in term of movies vs. tv shows vs. reality tv. Discovery+ leans in one direction. And that’s toward the reality section. This isn’t good for anyone looking for the all-in-one cord cutter experience, but it’s perfect for….. well everyone.

Take a step back and look at cord cutting as a whole. The top performing streaming service to-date and for the past 8 years has been Netflix. Why? Because they offer content other streaming services do not. There’s no longevity if everyone offered the same thing. Right? Services that offer niche content tend to stand out from the rest plus they are a lot cheaper than the all-in-one services. If every streaming service offered the same programming, how would consumers react? The only competition would be in the advertising.
I initially signed up for Discovery+ just to see what they had to offer. The free 7-day trial goes by pretty fast and I knew when to cancel, but I just couldn’t go through with it. I knew there was a lot of Discovery content I needed to catch up on, but I didn’t know I was missing THIS much. We’re talking about the creators of Shark Week, Dirty Jobs, River Monsters and tons more. Docs and Nature show galore. I was foaming at the mouth. All this for $4.99 per month. I’ll take it.
After 1 week of binge watching and new content being added daily. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be here for the long run. New series like “Amityville Horror House” and exclusive BBC nature shows. Geesh Discovery+, what are you doing to me. You can have my time, at least I’ll learn something from you guys.
