Just when consumers were finally getting the hang of cord-cutting, here comes a new service to cause more confusion.
Struum (pronounced “stroom”) is an up-and-coming streaming service aggregator that wants to help you find content and save money.
“Our mission is simple: to create the easiest way for people to find more of the content they love by providing value through a single subscription. As the OTT space continues to expand, there is an incredible amount of amazing video content options for TV and Movie streaming fans, but it can be overwhelming and expensive for the average viewer to delve into these options outside the biggest players in the market. With our platform, we will help viewers uncover new content and platforms, but also provide all SVOD services with the opportunity to be more easily, and frequently discovered by fans,” said company CEO Lauren DeVillier.
Struum’s concept isn’t totally new. Remember Dabby? People were ranting and raving about their new concept that aimed to consolidate subscription services and help consumers save money by showing them which services they used most. Based on their press release, Struum will be offering something similar, but in their case you don’t have to be subscribed to a specific service to watch it. Their platform will host various streaming service content and consumers can watch based on the amount of credits they have. Pricing, features and device availability have yet to be released.
Struum currently has deals with over 2 dozen services, amassing more than 20,000 TV series, movies and shorts. This will offer consumers a chance to discover and watch wide range of content from feature films, TV series, lifestyle and reality shows, and foreign language shows and series.
The company was put together by heavy-hitter big wigs from top companies like Discovery and Disney.
Paul Pastor: Previously EVP, Strategy, Revenue and Operations at Discovery Networks; prior, SVP, Strategy and Consumer Analytics at Disney/ABC TV Group.
Eugene Liew: Previous VP of Product & Technology at Walt Disney International, overseeing DisneyLife / DIsneyTheatre, and Disney Watch Apps.
Thomas Wadsworth: Previously Head of Advanced Product Development for Disney Parks, Experiences & Products; prior, head of Product and Design at DisneyLife (now Disney+).
Lauren Devillier: Previously Head of Product Discovery Ventures, leading the build and launch of a global kids SVOD service; prior, VP, Digital Media at Disney/ABC TV Group.
Their concept seems good, but so did Quibi and Dabby. For this to work, they will need to have all the content from every streaming service available. But isn’t this what Roku and Fire stick does? I give this a 20% chance of success. They’ll have to pull some major strings for this to work.
