With ATSC 3.0 expected to roll out slowly over the next few years, many consumers are wondering what steps they will need to take to accommodate this new Era of free TV. Remember the digital transition? Well this is pretty much the same thing, but I’m sure this time the government isn’t gonna cover the cost for a new 8K OLED television. Listed below are the Key things you should know about the 3.0 transition.

  • Will I need a new TV Antenna?

No, your current TV antenna will work fine.

  • Will my current TV work?

No. Just as with the digital transition, older non-digital TV sets didn’t work so you needed a converter box. The same goes for ATSC 3.0. TV sets made today are not capable of pulling in the new frequencies therfore you will either need a ATSC 3.0 converter box or Television.

  • What does this new Era of TV have to offer?

With ATSC 3.0 you will reportedly be able to have access to On-Demand content. 4K HDR video, Dolby Atmos, DTS-X and mobile internet viewing. All of these advanced features also means that your viewing habits could possibly be tracked, which is what drives this cord cutting market in general.

Looking forward. There is no information out on how this transition will affect Cable, Satellite and Streaming service local channels. My guess is that either the pricing will go up or the channels will no longer be available.
