There are a multitude of over-the-air converter boxes with recording feature on the market today. The biggest misconception about over the air television is that it’s bland, dry, boring and you can’t record but that’s not true anymore.
Converter boxes have come a long way since they were first needed by people with analog televisions. 2007 was the year, and at that time I was still a technician for a satellite company and I can remember that being a very busy time for us. In fact we we’re getting huge bonuses while others were losing their jobs.
I can remember people offering me their old analog tv’s and seeing them laying on the side of the road.
Most of the ota recorders I’ve seen tend to require and external memory source, such as a hard drive. Which nowadays you can get one with a lot of memory for under $100. THat’s not bad considering you won’t have a monthly cable bill.
There’s a DVR out there called Tablo that doesn’t connect to your television at all, just your wi-fi, external memory device and an HD antenna.
Plus you have to pay a service fee which is $5/mo, $50/yr or $150 for a lifetime. And the benefits to this is that you can watch your recorded shows and live television anywhere because it’s connected to their network, the drawback is you have to have internet to watch television. It has no video outputs.
With that being said, you’re guaranteed to save money with a digital converter box.
