For months I’ve been contemplating cancelling 2 of my most watched streaming subscriptions, Netflix and HBO Max, and the decision was not because of pricing. Both streaming services have great pricing especially when compared to their only comparable competitor, Hulu with ads.

Why I cancelled HBO Max and Netflix

Squidbillies Project Power
Squidbillies/ HBO Max- Project Power/Netflix

I subbed to HBO Max when they first launched in May of 2020 and was excited to have access to classic content that was not available on other platforms such a Squidbillies, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Martin, Chris Rock Comedies, documentaries, etc.

After a few months of binging on my favorite shows I started looking for new content and for the most part, there was nothing new for me to watch- or nothing that peaked my interest. At this point I decided to put HBO Max on the back burner while watching content on other platforms like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

During that time I ended up finding the 2011 movie ‘Hanna‘ and later on discovered there was also a series on Amazon Video. I binged the available 2 seasons and after being unsatisfied with the ending- the reason I don’t watch new series anymore- I decided to go over to Netflix and Hulu for content. At the time ‘Project Power‘ just dropped on Netflix and Hulu at the time had ‘Seinfeld‘ and Blumhouse ‘Into the Dark‘ horror/thriller series.

During this time I would check in on HBO Max, and for the most part the content just wasn’t there for me. I contemplated cancelling the service then, but in early 2021 HBO Max started same-day premieres– movies would air on their platform the same day as the theater release. This changed my whole perspective on HBO Max, even though there was little interest I saw this as an added value to my rotation of streaming services. I save money by not going to the theater plus I can watch a movie as many times as I want. So throughout 2021 the majority of my streaming was done on Netflix and HBO Max.

At the start of 2022 I noticed a big shift in the type of content on both platforms, HBO Max was no longer doing same day releases and Netflix started adding more series. As stated before, I stay away from new tv series because they tend to disappoint me by ending with more to be desired like we seen with the Prime Video series ‘Hanna‘ and the Crackle series ‘Chosen’. I prefer to watch older series that have concluded, that way I’m not left wonder when the new season will drop.

With no interest I decided to revisit some of my old streamers like Pluto and Tubi tv. Tubi has the best layout, features and content but together they are a streamers dream.
